The SSF 21D Cutlass Mk. II was the second of the two versions of the SSF 21D Cutlass line. The earlier version, the SSF 21D Cutlass Mk. I, had been used as a FLEA cruiser, bits its production had been halted in 2048 as the World Community entered the Proxima Wars.
In 2049, the new Terran Defense Agency chose to update the Cutlass design and use it as the basis for the Solar System local defense forces. The main changes were an engine upgrade and replacing the emergency rescue and repair storage facilities with nuclear weapons pods and laserlances.
In 2052, Cutlass Mk. IIs became famous for their role in the victory at the Battle for Mars. The 3rd Mars Interceptors were a Cutlass squadron at the battle, and ones of its officer, Major Sven Erikson, won fame for himself and his Cutlass, R2, due to his heroics in the battle.
Following the end of the war in 2068, no more Mk. IIs were commissioned, although they continued to be used, some leant to FLEA by the TDA. They were durable enough that, as of 2100, over 80 Mk. IIs were still in service, and its became popular for replicas equippment with modern technology to be made.
